Acne medications in pregnancy

The following topical medications may be used in pregnancy:

Glycolic acid

(Pregnancy Category B)

Erythromycin

Clindamycin

Azelaic acid

Metronidazole

Although oral medications are not considered first line treatment in pregnant women, it it is necessary to use oral medication, he following may be used (Pregnancy Category B)

Azithromycin

Cephalexin

Erythromycin

Pregnancy Category B refers to medications that were tested in pregnant animals and showed no risk to the foetus (presumed to be safe in pregnant women).

Category A are medicines that are determined to be safe in pregnant women in clinical studies. Since clinical studies are not performed in pregnant women, such information is not available.
